At the Physicians Wellness Center, we take a
multidisciplinary approach to weight management. We
realize that being overweight is a medical diagnosis with
both genetic and environmental factors. Obesity is a
medical diagnosis with many adverse consequences
including increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, high
blood pressure, gallbladder disease, breathing disorders,
gout, and some forms of cancer as well as lack of general
well being . Fortunately, more doctors are recognizing that
obesity is a medical condition and not simply a lack of self
control. Our goal is for permanent weight loss achieved by
regular aerobic activity, proper nutrition including a low fat
diet , and clinic support by regular medical evaluation,
support, counseling and education.

Physical therapy can help people with many types of
medical afflictions. It is an effective method of treating those
with musculoskeletal disorders, neurological dysfunctions
and those with other types of disease, injury or illness.
Manual therapy, joint mobilization, myofascial release and
neurodevelopmental (NDT) techniques are only some of the
special skills used to treat patients to help lessen disability,
pain and improve overall function and quality of life.
Therapists use special equipment called modalities when
treating patients which help aid in the healing and recovery
of an injury. Electrical stimulation, hot packs, cold packs,
infrared and ultrasound are only some of the modalities one
may require during a treatment session. As part of treatment
and the rehabilitation process, a physical therapist will often
stretch, strengthen, facilitate muscles, challenge balance, test
coordination abilities, teach home exercise programs and
enhance basic mobility skills.
For example, physical therapy is very beneficial and
important in the treatment low back pain. Hydrocollation
(heating pads) can help to relax painful muscle spasms. Use
heat for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Cryotherapy (ice
packs) and massages may also give relief. Therapeutic
ultrasound uses sound waves to heal the muscles.
Iontophoresis uses a current to deliver an anti-inflammatory
medication to the muscles, and electrical stimulation, which
helps a muscle contract. You can also have trigger point
injection to relieve spasms of muscles.

Millions of men and women with unwanted body hair spend countless hours on
temporary hair removal methods -- including shaving, waxing, applying
chemical depilatories, and tweezing. If you think about the hours you've
devoted to bleaching, shaving, creaming, tweezing and waxing unwanted hair,
you just might want to tear out all your hair. Laser hair removal is a promising
new treatment. Does it really remove hair safely, painlessly and permanently?
And is it worth the cost?
The idea of laser hair removal surfaced in 1992 when a laser physicist
accidentally zapped his arm, which at the time was covered with carbon
residue, and some of his arm hair fell off. The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) approved the use of lasers for hair removal in 1995.
The laser works by sending energy into the pigment of the hair shaft, which is
absorbed by the surrounding follicle. The heat generated by this process
damages the follicle and stops hair production. Lasers for hair removal can be
used only under a licensed practitioner's direction. All laser systems emit a
gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is
absorbed by the hair. The laser energy is then transformed into heat that can
disable the follicle. Potential side effects include redness and the darkening or
lightening of skin. The risk of scarring is very low. The ideal candidate for laser
hair removal is someone with fair skin and dark brown or black hair. Lasers,
such as the Smartepil laser (www.cynosurelaser.com) are now available that
can treat very dark skin types safely. Laser hair removal is appropriate for any
area where there is excess hair, with the important exception of the eye area.
Since the laser works on more than one follicle at a time, larger areas like the
back, arms or legs are just as easily treatable as smaller areas like the upper
lip or bikini line. Previously, because the hair is targeted on the basis of color,
the hair must be darker than the underlying skin for the laser to be effective.
When sprayed on the desired area, Meladine’s™ patented liposome delivery
system selectively deposits natural melanin directly into the hair follicle without
staining surrounding skin. The proprietary liposome molecules are small
enough to effectively penetrate the infundibulum, but are not taken up by the
bloodstream. The result is temporary melanin-rich follicles, which allow patients
with lighter hair colors to benefit from laser hair removal.

The average number of necessary laser treatments is usually 3-8 treatments
over 12 to 24 months. Each case will be different because each individuals
hair growth is different. Although the FDA has approved several types of laser
for permanent hair reduction, results can vary. Each individual has a different
metabolism, hormonal level, hair quality and number of hair follicles, all of which
can influence the outcome.
Microdermabrasion, first introduced to the American skin
care market almost four years ago, can help you achieve
that youthful glow and flawless look for which you’ve
been searching. Skin rejuvenation is now at a level once
only dreamed of; skin conditions previously looked at
as untreatable or only “manageable,” have been
corrected to the degree that they no longer recur. No
longer do we have to rely on resurfacing treatments that
create trauma to the skin and questionable days of
recovery. Microdermabrasion offers a safe, rejuvenating,
non-invasive approach. Although falsely implied in the
name, the dermis is not actually being abraded during
this procedure. The universal enthusiasm for this treat
ment and its unparalleled long-term benefits have kept
men and women of all ages coming back for more.
Microdermabrasion is a facial treatment designed to
soften fine wrinkles, smooth scarring and rejuvenate skin
by promoting unblemished skin growth.
Microdermabrasion achieves results by stimulating and
cleansing the skin with fine crystals that soften skin
irregularities, much like the process of exfoliating.
Microdermabrasion is a revolutionary new skin
restoration process, commonly referred to as "the lunch
time peel" because the procedure takes only minutes to
perform and most people can return to work
immediately. Microdermabrasion has been used at
exclusive European spas for many years. This unique skin
rejuvenation technique has recently received clearance
from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the
United States.
The microdermabrasion crystals are passed across the
skin with air and simultaneously vacuumed off. This
works to stimulate, exfoliate and ultimately rejuvenate
your skin. The results provide an immediate skin
treatment that opens your blood circulation to restore a
more youthful appearance.
An experienced and licensed physician controls a small
hand piece that applies a fine area of air and crystals to
the skin. There is an intense rubbing sensation with
friction, but this is not painful. The advantage of this
process is that it is not invasive and works in a step-wise
fashion. By initially spacing the treatment 2 weeks apart
for 4 treatments then spacing the next 2 treatments every
6 weeks you are able to maximize your results, but
individual needs differ. You can return immediately to
work or exercise. You should refrain from direct sun
exposure (use sunblock with at least SPF 15) for one
week before and after each treatment.
